Getting Out of My Comfort Zone – Best Decision I Ever Made

Getting out of your comfort zone sounds so simple when people say it. But in real life, it can be terrifying. For me, that moment began in November 2015, when my best friend was diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer. I was scared in a way I had never felt before. For six months, I flew back and forth to Las Vegas to help take care of him, carrying all the worry, the uncertainty, and the hope that he would get better.

When he went into remission in May 2016, it felt like I could breathe again. And the very first thing I did was book a trip to Australia and New Zealand — the absolute top of my bucket list. Life is so very short and I wasn’t going to waste another minute! But there was a twist: I booked the trip with a Jewish singles group. I had one relatively new friend going, but otherwise, I didn’t know a soul.

And let me tell you — right up until the day before departure, I almost canceled.

Self-doubt kept creeping in.

Would I fit in?

Would I feel lonely?

Was I crazy for doing this alone?

My cousin Lee finally said to me, “You have to go. It will either be the best trip of your life…or the worst. But you’ll never know if you don’t try.”

So I went. Heart pounding. Suitcase packed with more nerves than clothes. I boarded that plane anyway.

And that decision changed my life.

That trip didn’t just introduce me to kangaroos, the Great Barrier Reef, and the breathtaking beauty of New Zealand — it introduced me to courage. To friendship. To adventure. To discovering parts of myself I didn’t even know existed. Since then, I’ve traveled on more than 15 group trips, visited all seven continents, and made dozens and dozens of incredible friends from all over the world.

All because I said yes.

Yes to uncertainty.

Yes to showing up alone.

Yes to growth.

Yes to life beyond fear.

Stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t mean you’re not scared — it means you choose not to let the fear stop you. And sometimes, the biggest risks lead to the most meaningful chapters of our story.

I’m still grateful for Lee’s advice. Because that trip wasn’t the worst of my life.

It turned out to be one of the very best

My college friend, Mark, happened to be in Auckland New Zealand so we met for lunch before I joined my tour
Another thing Lee said, “say yes to everything”. I got on a 12 passenger plane and flew over the fjords from
Milford Sound back to Queenstown NZ. It turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Riding a jet boat on the Dart River
Holding Micro the koala bear
At the Great Barrier Reef
Hot air balloon ride over the rain forest in Australia
I climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge
And made some wonderful friends
