From JuJu with Love

Ketchikan did not disappoint! It looked at us and said, “Yes, you can!”

Today’s Alaska adventure starting with me accidentally exposing my “peaks” to the dockworkers

It’s only Day 1, and apparently I’m already creating unforgettable memories.

Our first stop was a Ketchikan duck boat tour through the city and out onto the water. We spotted bald eagles soaring overhead and sea lions swimming along the shoreline.

We fully embraced the experience (well… almost all of us). We happily bought the duck-bill whistles, posed with the giant plastic duck mascot, and looked completely ridiculous. Judy, however, drew the line at the duck whistle. Every group needs one sensible friend. 🤪

After the tour, we wandered down Mission Street to historic Creek Street, where we visited Dolly’s House, once part of Ketchikan’s famous red-light district. It’s such a fascinating glimpse into the town’s colorful past.

Lunch was at Alaska Crepe Co., where the crepes hit the spot before we did a little souvenir shopping. We stocked up on canned salmon and salmon spreads to bring a little taste of Alaska home.

Then, because the universe has a sense of humor, I stumbled across Julie’s Fine Jewelry & Arts. Naturally, there was only one appropriate response—stop, point enthusiastically at the sign, and document the moment. If your name is on the building, you pretty much have to take the picture. It’s travel law.

Our afternoon ended at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. Was it corny? Absolutely. Was it funny? Also absolutely. Sometimes you just have to embrace the cheesiness and enjoy the show.

The weather gave all of us a spectacular bad hair day, but nobody seemed to care. After months of planning, we were finally standing in Alaska, laughing our way through our first port.

Ketchikan… you were the perfect way to begin this adventure.
