I’ve been on African safari and seen some of the most incredible wildlife in the world.
Elephants. Lions. The great migration from above in a hot air balloon.
I just returned from Alaska where we saw bears and whales and bald eagles.
But lately…
I’ve realized I might not have had to travel quite so far.
Because right here in Bloomfield Hills, on an ordinary walk with my sled dog doodle, I’ve seen:
A flock of turkeys taking over the street like they run the neighborhood.

Deer on the golf course at sunrise, looking more peaceful than any meditation app I’ve ever tried.

A deer so close in my yard it felt like I should say good morning.

Bucks casually hanging out in front of someone’s house like they just got home from work.

Entire deer families strolling through like it’s a planned outing.

Every season offers something on the Bloomfield Hills Safari.

And, according to my tour guide, every safari has watering holes.
Ours has cooling stations.
Maizey knows exactly where they are. On warm mornings, she’ll drag me to her favorite sprinkler, stand in the spray with pure joy, shake water all over me, and then continue leading the expedition. Today she stopped at the first one… and proudly walked right past the second. Apparently one spa treatment was enough.

No tickets.
No tour guide.
No itinerary.
Just me, Maizey…
and whatever decides to show up that day.
On an African safari, you go looking for wildlife.
In Bloomfield Hills…
you just go for a walk.
Either way, I will stop and take pictures.

Most people have a morning commute.
Around here, apparently the wildlife does too.

Today’s wildlife encounter wasn’t a turkey, a bunny, or a family of cranes. It was this sign reminding us that on the safari… even the golf carts have the right of way. 😜⛳
